Recognition Banquet

Chamber Programs > Recognition Banquet

Join us for our Annual Recognition Banquet celebrating outstanding Chamber members and organizations that help make northern Nevada a better place to live. Every year we come together to award "Business of the Year", "Non-Profit of the Year" and award the prestigious Raymond I. Smith Civic award to an exceptional community leader. We collect nominations from members and our committee goes over the tallies to determine the winner. Winners are announced at the Recognition Banquet.

Honoring the exceptional.
The Chamber strives to recognize those outstanding individuals and organizations in our community that make a difference. From the smallest business to the largest non-profit, we accept nominations from members and tally the results to determine who has a made an impact in northern Nevada. With so many outstanding companies and entities it can be a difficult task! Chamber members are constantly providing new services, starting new initiatives and programs to improve our quality of life.

The Raymond I. Smith Civic Leader of the Year Award

The Man: Both in terms of corporate philanthropy and the growth of the gaming industry, Raymond I. Smith was a precedent-setting pioneer. He donated, on an annual basis, more than $90,000 in college scholarships and another $100,000 to worthy charities.

The Award: Each year since 1966, The Chamber has presented a Civic Leader of the Year Award in Smith's memory.

The Selection Process: The honoree is to be selected by a panel made up of past chairs of The Chamber and past recipients. The Chamber will provide its members with an opportunity to submit nominations for the selection committee's consideration.

The Criteria: The award will be presented to an individual who has: 1) led organizations that improve the quality of life in our community; 2) selflessly devoted time and/or money to worthwhile local causes; and/or made an impact in finding and implementing solutions to local challenges.

Recognition: The honoree will be recognized at a major Chamber event (usually the annual recognition banquet); and on a plaque alongside the Truckee River.

Raymond I. Smith

Many people in Reno/Sparks contribute Reno's explosive growth in the 1940s and 1950s to Raymond I. Smith, a pioneer in Nevada gaming. Listed as one of the top 50 most historically influential Americans, Raymond coined a popular national phrase "Harold's Club or Bust!" which was one of the first viral marketing campaigns that existed in the early 1940s. A dedicated community man Raymond I. Smith saw the importance of education and community and was one of the first pioneers in mega casino resorts.

  • We carry on his selfless legacy by awarding the Raymond I. Smith award to exceptional civic & community leaders
  • The Raymond I. Smith award is a shining achievement in business and philanthropy, well recognized across Nevada
